Retaining walls are one of those projects where you really want to do it right the first time. Retaining walls do not just add beauty to your home, but these walls also serve a very important function, to protect and prevent earth from sliding down a slope. A poorly built retaining wall without the proper base and drainage system installed behind it can fail quickly in climates like we have here in the Syracuse area. Green Earth Landscaping Syracuse is the leading retaining wall contractor in the area.
I know this because I learned the hard way! Early in my career I built some beautiful walls that looked great the year I installed them but slowly over the next few winters they slowly pushed out when the water that was trapped behind the wall froze solid and expanded. This freezing process caused the ice/water to freeze pushing out the wall and causing the blocks to become uneven. I have to say, I went back and repaired these walls under warranty, therefore learning a hard lesson.
So, before you make any decision about having a retaining wall installed, pay attention to the following discussed factors, check all the possible variations for retaining wall materials, and costs, and get some professional help to complete the installation of a retaining wall.
The cost of any retaining wall completely depends on the selected materials and other factors like the height and length of the wall. Retaining walls we have built in the Syracuse area have cost anywhere from $1500 for a small decorative garden wall up to over $25,000 for large walls.
Other than length, height, and materials, some other factors also add to the overall cost of a retaining wall.
Location of the wall
Based on your property, the cost of a retaining wall may vary. If the wall is to be built closer to the road where we access the work area easily, this could decrease the cost. On the other hand, if your project is 3oo ft out in the backyard, then the price would increase as more labor will be required to get the excavation and wall materials in and out of the job
Amount of excavation
Some landscapes require more excavation for existing retaining walls. The topography of where we will install the wall can effect the cost. Also, if there is an existing wall we are replacing, there would be costs for removing that too.
Check the soil type
Soil testing is also required for the overall cost estimation of retaining wall. Based on the water-holding properties of soil, your cost estimation will vary. Material like bedrock will increase the cost of your keeping wall.
Probably the most important part of the wall is the drainage system installed behind the wall. You must give the water a way to get out from behind the wall or hydrostatic pressure will build up. In the winter, that water will also freeze, pushing the wall out. Most drainage systems installed are pretty basic and consist of perforated piping, clean stone and filter fabric to allow the water to flow through.
Retaining walls have a crucial role to play in the overall appearance of your home. They not only look great but also protect your home. Now, you have a pretty fair idea for the cost of retaining wall, and you can build one for your home without any confusion.
