It’s that time of year… When your brick paver patio or walkway is in a shady area moss sometimes forms between the pavers in the sand joints. This unsightly issue can be a real pain for some homeowners who have removed the moss only to see it come back in the same places. Many different ways to attack the moss have been used. Most of the time the moss comes back anyway due to the lack of sunlight, but there are ways to delay the inevitable.
The first step is to remove the existing moss. Here in Syracuse at Green Earth Lawn & Landscape we use a pressure washer to remove the moss from the joints. While this is a quick and less physical way to do it, let me warn you it can be very, very messy. The spray from the pressure washer will blow the moss and dirt up on to the house, on any cars parked nearby and on to any plants near the patio or walkway. We use spare sheets of plywood to lean up against the house to protect it from the spray. Protecting cars is as easy as moving them out of the affected area. For the plantings and or landscape beds, we use clear plastic sheeting to lay over them. Taking these few extra precautions can save you from damaging your property or having to spend more hours cleaning up after the job.
There are several methods used to prohibit the moss from coming back so quickly. The first method most homeowners have tried is spraying bleach on the moss. The second method is also another natural choice, vinegar. These are a couple options for you to use if you just want to use some basic household cleaning solutions. The third method is to buy a moss killer / moss inhibitor from your local hardware or big box store. There are several different brands available when we checked.
If you have an area that just does not get enough sunlight, moss can be a real stubborn opponent. Removing it and applying some of the above methods can keep the moss at bay for some time, maybe even a season or two. Or, the easiest option would be to embrace the look of the moss because some people actually plant the moss when they are looking for the “old world” look.
