The last thing anyone wants to perform on a brick paver patio is maintenance! Some time ago a product called polymeric sand was invented to make life easier for anyone with a brick patio or brick walkway.
What is it? Poly Sand is a fine sand that is combined with, silica, and when mixed with water, forms a binding agent.
What does it do?
Improves Durability– The binding agents in polymeric sand will harden and lock the pavers together creating a strong foundation.
Eliminates Washouts– Hardened Polymeric will hold up to most fierce rainfall and will stay put in between the joints. Plain old sand will quickly wash out of the joints and end up all over your brick.
Weed Resistance– Using Polymeric Sand will greatly reduce the amount of weeds in the joints of your brick patio or walkway. The hardened sand is not a kind space for the weeds to grow.
Colored Sand– The most common colors are gray or tan. This allows you to choose a color that will go with or contrast the brick pavers you use.
Polymeric Sand is most commonly sold in 50 lb bags but you may be able to find smaller containers at big box stores that cater to homeowners.
Proper installation is a very important step. If not installed properly you can end up with a white haze on top of the brick pavers that is very difficult to remove and you will end up with discolored pavers. For this reason you must read the directions carefully and follow them exactly as instructed. Most companies also sell a polymeric haze remover product that can be used if necessary. I can tell you from experience you will be much happier if you read the directions and do it properly the first time!
A completed polymeric sand installation will give you years of enjoyment by reducing or eliminating maintenance from your brick patio or walkway.
