As a resident of Cicero, what are some things you can do to get your lawn ready for winter? And what are some things you don’t want to do? Here is a rundown on how to take care of your lawn this fall.
Cut your lawn a little bit shorter the last couple cuts of the year. This can cut down the chance of getting snow mold in the Spring.
Applying a Fall fertilizer is a great time to repair your lawn from the stress it has endured during the hot, dry Summer. The grass roots are thirsty for the fertilizer this time of year and this is one of the best times of the year to apply fertilizer in the Syracuse and Cicero area for a healthy and beautiful lawn.
Mulch your leaves
Mulching your leaves is actually a good thing to do for your lawn if you can get them down to small pieces. The ground up leaves do have some nutrient value to add to the lawn, so go ahead and run that lawn mower over the leaves and chop them up.

If you have any bare areas in your yard, the fall is a great time to re-seed and get some grass growing for next season. Take a hard rake and loosen up the soil going down a half inch or so to give the seed a bed to lay in then just keep it watered daily until the seed is established and is ready for its first mowing. In the Cicero area, with our climate, you should get the grass seed down by October 15 th to make sure it gets fully established before the first frost of the season which can kill small seedlings.
Piles of leaves left on your lawn can block out sunlight and smother the grass causing it to die out. So make sure to either mulch your leaves or rake them off and out to the curb.
Tall grass going in to winter can invite snow mold to develop and can cause damage to the grass come spring time.
