Common Lawn Mowing Mistakes in Syracuse NY

If you own a home, it’s important to mow your lawn with some regularity. Not only is it mandated by many HOAs, but it also plays a role in curb appeal, strengthens the grass, and can help to prevent pest infestations.

Yet mowing a lawn is not as simple as taking out a lawn mower every Sunday. It’s not uncommon to make a few, simple mistakes that can prevent your home from looking its best, and possibly contribute to the development of lawn disease. The following are some of the most common mistakes homeowners in Cicero and Syracuse make when mowing their properties.

Lawn Mowing Mistakes to Avoid

  • Cutting Too Short – It’s not uncommon to let your lawn go every once in a while. But it’s important to avoid the temptation to cut too short all at once. It is recommended that you cut the grass by roughly 33% at most in one mowing, to avoid ripping and tearing the grass. It is also recommended that you leave between 1 and 4 inches of grass depending on grass type. Call Green Earth for help determining your ideal mowing height.
  • Mowing After Watering/Rain – It rains here in the Syracuse/Cicero area. When it doesn’t rain, it’s not uncommon to want to water the lawn. But neither should occur before you mow. Wet lawns have looser soil, and that can cause your lawnmower to push, move, and spread the dirt in a way that leaves your lawn lumpy and less attractive.
  • Cutting with Dull Blades – Your lawn mower blades need to be able to swipe a perfect cut through each blade of grass. Dull blades rip and pull the grass, damaging it. Cleaning your blade may seem like a chore, but it can have many beneficial effects on the long term health of your lawn.
  • Picking Up The Clippings – You may have been taught to bag the cut grass, but each grass blade is filled with nutrients your lawn needs. Grass clippings are filled with water, and will quickly dissolve. Leaving them in the lawn will then return some of those nutrients directly to the roots that use them, providing you with a natural, effective fertilizer.
  • Mowing Too Fast – Most lawn mowers are equipped to move quickly. But rushing through your lawn may run the risk of pulling at grass blades or causing uneven cuts. Moving at a faster pace is okay, and shouldn’t harm your grass, but try your best not to rush through it. A steady, constant speed is a better way to mow.

Other Considerations with Mowing

Damaged grass is weak grass, and weak grass may not be strong enough to fight away lawn diseases and weeds. That is why it is important to make sure you’re mowing the proper way, using the right techniques and a good, working lawn mower to help you with the process.
